Why does ice melt?

Melting is a battle between heat and structure. In ice, water molecules are locked in a rigid cage.

When you add heat, the molecules vibrate more and more violently. Eventually, they have enough energy to break the cage bars. They start sliding past each other, and boom—you have liquid water.
