A simple pendulum is a weight suspended from a pivot so that it can swing freely. It is a great example of "Simple Harmonic Motion".

Galileo discovered that the time it takes to swing (period) depends only on the LENGTH of the string, not the mass of the bob. This principle was used to make the first accurate Grandfather clocks.
